Release date: Jan 1, 2025, Argentina
Miles Davis' Doo Bop landed back in 1992 and is now reissued to remind what a bold posthumous experiment it was in blending jazz and hip-hop. Produced by Easy Mo Bee, the record pairs Davis' signature trumpet with looping beats, electronic textures and clever samples. It's as good in practice as it sounds on paper with a gritty, cinematic sound and tracks like the title cut and 'Duke Booty' highlighting the great one's improvisational genius over urban, rhythmic backdrops. Initially criticised for its departure from classic jazz, the album now feels visionary and anticipated many modern genre-crossing works in a similar mould. Doo Bop proves Davis' restless creativity was ahead of his time and that he could innovate fearlessly to the end, his soulful expression and emergent energy of early 90s hip-hop being perfect bedfellows.
